Choosing a toy for anal play
There are a number of factors to consider when choosing an anal toy, more than when selecting other types of toys.
There are not many aspects of sexuality and sexual accessories/toys that have strong recommendations for usage (or not). Our general philosophy with toys is, "Use it for whatever you want, just don't hurt yourself". Well, this is an exception and one that could indeed hurt you. Our anal anatomy has some unique characteristics that require a toy that adapts well to them. So, if you find yourself in the market for a new anal toy, or especially if it is your first, pay special attention to the following:

Flared base - The number one consideration when selecting a toy for anal penetration is if the toy has a flared base, an end that is substantially broader than the insertion portion. The reason for this? Simply put, to avoid a toy being completely inserted into the rectum. The rectum and anal canal have involuntary muscles that can draw in an object and clamp shut. While in some cases it might be forced out by bearing down. However, every year there are quite literally thousands of instances of emergency room visits where an object was pulled up into the rectum and refused to come out. This turns your sexy fun time into a dangerous situation requiring an uncomfortable and embarrassing detour. No one wants that.
Because of this, only put objects up your butt that have a base securing it against slipping all the way inside. This could be a large suction cup, a "T" shaped end, or a handle. This is easy to do since there are so many penetrative toys out there with flared bases. So, take our advice, get that flared base toy for anal play and have a pleasure filled session without an ER doc's participation.

Materials - The rectum is a passageway for poo. Many pathogens are carried via feces and any object that comes in contact with them should be cleaned as much as possible. Some materials are more easily cleaned or sterilized than others. For anal toys made of soft materials, we recommend silicone. Silicone is an exceptionally tough material than an be bleached, boiled, and put through the dishwasher. For hard materials, we recommend metal (aluminum or medical grade stainless steel) or ABS plastic. Similar to silicone these materials can withstand harsh cleaners like bleach and high temperatures. So, rest easier knowing you have a clean a butt toy as possible and buy one made of these materials. Yes, you can certainly buy a PVC or rubber plug, you just may not be able to get it as squeaky clean as the other materials.

Speaking of squeaky clean, what about odors? Odors are a tougher to remove and even after a good cleaning there might be a bit of an unpleasant smell if you get up close to the toy. Aggressive cleaning involving long term exposure to the cleaning agent (soap or bleach solution) or mechanism (heat) might work just fine. Can also try soaking in a white vinegar solution. Is it ok to leave the toy with a slight odor? Sure. It will likely dissipate with time or not cause any noticeable surrounding smell.

Activity - What you may find browsing the aisles in search of an anal toy is a variety of shapes and styles. You will want to select a toy based on what you want it to do. If you want to "wear" the toy handsfree, then choose a plug. Plugs are easily the most popular anal toy available. They come in a huge variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. They are generally shaped in way that is ideal for those engaging in anal play. They can be thrusted in and out, left in place for that "full" feeling, tease the outside, and come in vibrating versions. If you want a texture experience, select beads. Beads involve the fun of inserting them one by one and then pulling out one by one for an intense sensation. Is this toy intended to stimulate the prostate? Then find a toy with the right curvature towards the front of the body. If the toy is to be ridden or thrusted, then choose a dildo with a flared base or anal probe.
