Vibrators
Pressure wave toys
The next generation of clitoral pleasure
Probably one of the biggest innovations when it comes to pleasure technology, especially women's pleasure, has been the vibrator. Vibration can feel good all over the body, but vibrators excel at stimulating the clitoris. They have given countless clit owners access to pleasure and orgasms, even many who had troubles achieving by themselves or with a partner. Vibrators have continued to enjoy immense popularity for their simplicity of design and ease of use. For near a century nothing has come close to challenging what a trusty vibrator can do... until very recently.

The aquarium pump and the hose. Once upon a time a German retiree and hobbyist inventor read that women were less sexually satisfied than men. Using this as inspiration, Michael Lenke went to his workshop and tinkered with an old aquarium pump and rubber hosing. Over the next two years his patient wife, Brigitte, tested his design tweaks to this original concept until she finally approved of one. Further field tests at a local swinger's club confirmed they were on to something. In 2014, Michael's invention, the Womanizer, launched out of their garage. This orgasmic milestone would lead to the biggest disruption in women's pleasure since, well, the vibrator.

What is pressure wave?
Air wave, pleasure wave, pressure wave.... what do these toys actually do? The Womanizer and its descendants utilize air pressure variation as the core stimulation mechanism. Simply put, a chamber is open on one end and has a moveable "diaphragm" on the other. The open end is placed lightly on or around the body part intended for stimulation, creating a light seal. Once powered up, the diaphragm rapidly moves back and forth creating alternating air pressure (aka, sucking and blowing).

Against the skin, especially sensitive tissue such as the clitoris, this creates stimulation without actually touching it. Users often describe the experience as different than a vibrator, with descriptions of the sensations being deeper, more resonating, tapping, and sucking all at once. Think of it as the air pressure vibrating the tissue itself. A common misunderstanding (or poor labeling by manufacturers) is that the toys "suck". While some may produce a light suction sensation, they do not pull like a true suction toy.
While it took some time for the toys to catch on, there is no doubt they are here to stay. This tech has brought pleasure to countless happy people around the world and is now incorporated into a large variety of styles. Since those early days in a German basement, Womanizer has gone on to become a dominant producer in pressure wave and the sex toy industry. Countless other manufacturers have rushed to embrace pressure wave and this has lead to one of the biggest viral toys in recent years.... "The Rose". Shaped like a rose bloom with the pressure wave nozzle in the middle, this visually appealing design took the internet by storm as the world emerged from the COVID pandemic.

Other things to know:
-
You will also notice that the toys make unique noises, a sort of rapid thrum or patting sound. This is normal and can vary from toy to toy.
-
Most (if not all) are waterproof and rechargeable.
-
Many use silicone for their soft materials, making them durable and easy to clean.
-
Biggest differences amongst designs are going to be the size, depth and shape of the nozzle. This in turn can affect how the toy feels.
-
Some are available with insertable portions to experience vaginal pleasure inside and clitoral out. More toy variations incorporating pressure wave are quickly hitting shelves as the tech matures into becoming an industry standard.
