All about cockrings

Whether it's helping a penis rise to attention or to stay that way, there is more to cockrings than one might think!

What is a cockring and what is it for?

A cockring, also called a c-ring, constriction ring, or penis ring, is a device worn on the penis with the intention of improving erection performance.  It does this by adding compression to the veins exiting the penis, slowing the outflow of blood, and trapping more blood in the erectile tissue.  (For more on penis anatomy, click/tap here.)  This simple mechanism benefits those with erectile issues (like ED) by offering a non-medicinal way to attain and keep a firmer erection.  For those without erectile difficulty, rings can also enhance how stimulation feels, change the look and feel of the penis, and possibly delay or intensify orgasms.  â€‹

The most common and simple rings are rubbery, stretchy rings made of TPR/TPE, silicone, or blends.  These are made in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and stretchiness to meet a variety of needs or preferences.   There are some options allowing for more finite pressure and adjustability, like lassos or snap closures.  Beyond that there are numerous other materials and designs that change how the ring is used, where/how it is worn, and the addition of a vibrator for the wearer's or partner's pleasure.

Stretchy rings - As the name implies these are rings made of some kind of rubber, be it silicone, TPE (rubber), or a blend.  The flexible nature of the material allows the rings to stretch like a big rubber band.  The tension created by the stretched material is what provides the necessary functional compression to assist with erections.  They come in varying diameters, thicknesses, and stretchability.  These three components affect the amount of compression and how focused or broad it is applied.   These are by far the most common and popular rings due to their ease of use and effectiveness in addition to the ability to mold them into a huge amount of colors and designs.  As such, here are some common variants of stretchy rings:

- Vibrating:  Many popular c-rings out there incorporate a vibrator perched on the outside of the ring to provide stimulation for either a partner's clitoris or the wearer's scrotum, penis, or perineum.  The vibrators rang in size from a tiny, disposable one about an inch long to large, rumbly, rechargeable vibrators for maximum stimulation.

- Dual:  A dual ring incorporates two attached rings where one wraps around the top of the scrotum to offer a pleasurable tugging sensation.  Often seen in vibrating rings, you often see a variation where one ring goes on the shaft behind the scrotum and the additional ring in front.  This can help stabilize the vibrator as well as change how the ring feels.

- Sling/stretchers combos:  Think dual ring, but with more focus on bringing some fun to the testicles/scrotum.  Start with a ring then add ball stretchers or slings into the design.  The effect is delightful combination of erection enhancement, increased tugging on the testicles, and/or positioning of the scrotum away from the body.

- Anal combo: These types of plug and ring combinations are becoming quite popular.  Simply take a ring and attach it to a plug.  Now attached, the plug is anchored by ring and any movement on the ring end translates to movement in the plug.  This stimulates nerves and erogenous zones in two areas making for a peak pleasure.

- Pump/handle rings:  These are rings with extra material for handles on the outside of the ring.  This allows for easier gripping of the ring for putting on or removing from a pump cylinder and the penis.  Even if you are not using it with a pump, handles can make using your ring all the easier to grip and maneuver.

Adjustable size rings - These rings are usually a length of stiffer material that forms a ring by drawing together the two ends at the adjustment mechanism.  Most common examples are cinch rings that are adjusted through a cord stopper, sort of like a lasso.  These rings have the advantage of being very customizable and easier to put on and take off than other rings.

Fixed-width rings -  These are inflexible rings often made of stiff rubber or metal and best suited for specific situations.  They allow for longer term, casual wear since they are not actively applying pressure like a stretchy ring.   The compression occurs when reaching a partial erection and the tissue presses against the ring.  Many of them are unique in design, material, or weight for visual appeal or for changing the look and feel when wearing clothes.  In other words, you could wear these out as a fashion accessory or a sexy secret.

The world of rings is pretty vast and there is a huge variety of size, shape, color, stretch, and so on.  Before diving into the types of rings, bear in mind that rings are worn for a few different reasons. These reasons affect how the rings are designed and as such there are two broad, informal design elements.  There are "functional" components which are intended to enhance an erection. Then there are "pleasure" elements that enhance the look and feel of the penis or add to a partner's pleasure.   All rings fall along a range of more functional, pleasurable, or both.  Choosing which is right for you is purely a personal preference and may take using more than one ring and/or asking questions.

How to use a cockring

For a ring to be the most useful for the wearer and their erection potential, it must apply the right pressure at the right points.  Simply, that means placing it as far back along the shaft as is possible and comfortable.  It can be placed right in front of the testicles to get started, but we recommend getting it behind the testicles for best results.  This puts as much shaft, skin, and so on in front of the ring in addition to anchoring the ring.

Stretchy rubber/silicone rings:  For rubbery rings, using them requires paying attention to just a few details.  First, stretch the ring out as much as possible before moving it around the penis.  If you have the ability to be partially erect, this can make putting it on a bit easier.  To reduce the possibility of pinching skin or pulling hair, place a light application of water-based lubricant around the penis or ring.  Adjust the position of the ring if you need or want for optimal comfort.  Once the ring is in place and exerting the right pressure, the rest is up to your body's hydraulics.  It often isn't as simple as putting on the ring, usually some kind of increased blood flow and arousal helps.

If pain, numbness, or discoloration occurs at any time while wearing the ring, remove immediately.  Also, when using these stretchy rings do not exceed 30 minutes of continuous wear.  This is to prevent circulation related issues and any burst blood vessels.   If issues arise immediately, or frequently, consider choosing a different ring with less pressure.

When done using the ring, hook your fingers under the ring, stretch it out and remove.  Again, a little bit of water based lubricant can help with any pinching or pulling. â€‹

Adjustable size rings:  Place these rings where desired, add a bit of lubricant if pinching or pulling occurs.  Tighten the ring to a pressure that is not painful and begins the process of restricting blood flow.  Be careful when drawing the ring tighter as unchecked tightening might grab sensitive scrotal skin.  Once done, release the tension and remove.  Otherwise observe all other precautions and usage guidelines as rubbery rings.  â€‹â€‹

Fixed-width rings:

These are the most advanced and difficult rings to choose and use.  This is primarily because these rings must be put on and taken off when the penis is flaccid (soft).   Also, they come in differing sizes and choosing the correct one for your own anatomy is more difficult and quite important.  Lastly, they do not apply the same amount of useful, active compression at the start as their stretchy siblings.  Using the other rings for erection enhancement is quite simply easier, faster, and safer.

If you are a more advanced user and really want the benefits of sporting a fixed-width ring, then here is ho how to use them.  To start with, attempt to determine the diameter of your penis and, especially when in doubt, buy a larger ring.  You may have to buy another size down, but that may very well be worth it.  To put on, start by putting one testicle through, followed by the second, then tuck and pull the soft penis through.  Once this is done adjust the skin of the scrotum and shaft for the most comfortable fit.  If pinching and pulling is an issue, apply some lubricant.   To remove, return to a soft state, then reverse the above steps.

WARNING!  Here is where we should tell you of the risk of using such a ring and why sizing is crucial.  Underestimating how tight the ring will be could have significant consequences.  Choosing a ring that is too tight could mean the ring will go on, but, once erect, is uncomfortably or painfully tight.  Often this results in a need to abruptly cease activities, allow the penis to drain and soften, and then remove the ring as soon as possible.

In more extreme circumstances, a super tight ring causes the low pressure veins to be too compressed to let blood escape much at all, the penile tissue swells, and the ring is stuck in place  Depending on duration and severity, this could develop into ischemia, where oxygen deprived tissue begins to sustain damage (cell death/necrosis).  This usually means the wearer and their swollen, painful penis must rush to the hospital and have the ring sawed off.
